Though we’re a PC shooter cast, it’s the end of the year and on this cast we look at the whole genre of 2011 PC games. We’ll get to the FPS titles soon enough, but this year, we had a raft of non-FPS games that frankly outshone and outdid most of the shoot-em’ups.
Aside from our co-hosts Chris, from the Blackmonkeys.de and Jim from FPSAdmin.com we have a special guest, Josh — you know him as JD_2020 — from aggregame.com on to talk about the games of 2011.
In addition to sizing up the games of the year, we get into a spirited discussion about gaming criticism and this year’s hot-button topic: Metacritic scores.
Here are some of the games we noticed this year:
- Star Wars: The Old Republic, BioWare
- Saints Row: The Third, Volition, Inc.
- Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, Bethesda Softworks (voted by you as best game of the year..tied with Batman)
- Portal 2, Valve
- Total War: Shogun 2 (my vote for best non-FPS game of the year)
- Batman: Arkham City (voted by you as best game of the year..tied with Skyrim)
As for the FPS Games…there were many
- Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 (Infinity Ward)
- Battlefield 3 (EA DICE)
- Rage Shooter id Software
- Duke Nukem Forever
- Brink
- Homefront
- Bulletstorm
- Dead Space 2
My vote? World of Tanks.

Happy 2012 everyone!

Great, great cast ! JD had some really good points, as did everyone else.
Looking forward to your next show ! Hopefully JD makes a return and you all talk about some other good games, like, as already mentioned, The Witcher 2, Red Orchestra, …
Oh well just means you have 9 more topics to cover in the next FBS
And yes i have a good gaming PC but even my PC was feeling the strain when playing Witcher 2 all maxed out its a beautiful game
’tis true Jo3. I think this year will bring many good topics for Jock and the crew to discuss and keep me entertained and enthralled on my 85 mile commute to work, lol. And they won’t be negative topics either. I think things in the gaming world are shaping up for us. Or, maybe I’m under some sort of Skyrim spell which can only be broken by taking an arrow in the knee. (sorry)
Great cast! But, yeah, have to agree with Jo3, RO2 should be mentioned with love in our hearts when talking about PC fps gaming. The only thing it fell short in was it’s bad release date timing. Otherwise, best fps game for the PC this year, imo. Seriously. All PC features that we have been bitching about since MW2 are in it. And it’s fun also.
Good cast
Just on a side note you missed out some amazing games this year 2 that jump out are the Witcher 2 (amazing RPG well worth a try I recommend it), Deus Ex – Human Revolution (I’m playing it now and I am having a lot of fun with it). Also Red Orchestra 2 Heroes of Stalingrad is another game I would recommend if you like a high skill, realistic (to a degree) shooter I would give it a try (also its only cheep.)
With reviews I don’t think a scoring system is good to review games at all, I listen to my friends and people were I know their history e.g. games what they like, and their tastes. That way I know the persons bias and subjectivity, the danger with Metacritic is you don’t know the persons bias/subjectivity. Everyone is subjective, no one is truly objective it is impossible for someone to do a review without them putting their subjectivity on it.
I am a History student and I have to learn this sort of thing when analysing quotes and sources of information and it is very similar to analysing reviews form people.
Thanks for the interesting cast Jock, Chris, Jim and Josh (good to see you have not disappeared off the radar JD
)
P.s.
I agree Duke Nukem forever biggest pile of poo ever
JO3,
There were a lot of excellent points being made in the cast so I didn’t want to interrupt too often. As well, we only covered 1/10th of what I had planned, so we missed great games like you mentioned. Witcher is one that I wanted to talk about, but didn’t get to. Though I don’t have it, I’ve seen it being played (some friends have it) and the graphics are very impressive – the best this year? Thanks for comments!
Oops, you must’ve posted this while I was writing mine. I see your point.
