Update 7 (9pm 16 Oct 09)
Thanks to for the heads up:
IW vid states that MW2 will be out for Xbox, PS3, and PC on 11/10/09 -- Fast forward to 3.15 - 3.31min
Rudedog's Twitter: I also received confirmation (of the 10th Nov release for PC -ed) from Activision pointing me to 402s comments on VG247.
Update 6 (3pm 12 Oct 09)
MatTks from weplaycod, suggests that any retailers who have changed their PC release dates to 11/24 would have been contacted by Activision.
He also says that his contacts suggest the PC SKU might need "more work".
There is still no official
public confirmation on any of this.
Update 5 (12pm 11 Oct 09)
Fourzerotwo attempts to regain control over the story with an official non-answer (from Twitter):
@
No answer to tweet. PC officially is not delayed unless I update
otherwise. Wouldn't know if it's delayed till at least next week.
6:14 PM Oct 9th from web in reply to tazman311
Christopher E. is keeping tabs of the countries showing the PC SKU delay:
Up to now the shops with 11-24-2009 release date for PC MW2 are in the following countries :
UK, Norway, Sweden, North America, Australia, South Africa, France, Finland, Holland, Czech Republic, Russia and Belgium.
Um. That's pretty much everywhere
Update 4 (12am 9 Oct 09)
Thanks to Christopher for putting me in touch with Activision's PR guru, John Rafacz. I asked John a few times to lay to rest the PC SKU delay rumors. Sadly, all I received from him was this:
"I am unable to comment on rumor/speculation", J. Rafacz.
Update 3 (8pm 7 Oct 09)
"When I left, it was fine". No that quote did not come from FEMA head Michael Brown just before Katrina hit New Orleans, that's from IW's Rob Bowling's (Fourzerotwo) latest Twitter post, referring to the rumors regarding the PC SKU:
"I know our PC
players are anxious for official word. I am as well. I will let you
know as soon as I do. I promise. When I left, it was fine." - Fourzerotwo
Rob's hesitant quote seems to indicate that there may actually be an issue. He may be too far removed (he's in Europe right now) from the action to speak authoritatively on the issue, so I can see why he needs to be cautious.
On another note, I received a link from Christopher E. today pointing me to one website that is now purporting to state that the console SKU is *also* threatened. Source.
Looks like it's open season now for everyone and anyone looking to generate web traffic.
Please IW and Activision, dispel or confirm these rumors. Say something....anything. Wink...lift a finger in the air...
Oh oh...was that the bunt signal?
Update 2 (8pm 6 Oct 09)
Still no official word from Infinity Ward or Activision regarding the rumored PC SKU release delay.
We were emailed a few hours ago from Christopher E. who suggested that the rumor might have some credence:
Several online retailers including the biggest one in Sweden have altered the MW2 PC release date to the 24th.
Amazon, Play and ebay.i.e. Still have it as the 10th.
It is not clear whether the 24th is fancied as a purely a European date. Is the 10th still on target for a North American PC release? Remember the one week delay Europe had back in CoD4? Is this more of the same?
Rumors aside, it is interesting to have seen the reaction PC gamers have had recently regarding the complete lack of PC news from IW and now the defeaning silence from them over this delay. Mixed in with some indignation over the lack of information, most gamers seem to be expressing sadness -- not hatred. I still see that PC players aren't beating IW or ATVI too much over this. Imagine what would have happened to Treyarch if they were the ones at the center of this hurricane? Looks like the PC guys are cutting MW2 a bit of slack, but I'm not sure there's any more play left in this cable...
Update 1 (Noon 6 Oct 09)
According to Rave79 from our boards,
2. Rudedog from fpsadmin.com tells us:
Correction, I spoke with Jason West
Still waiting on a reply
from Activision. They where trying to track down the Activision head of
Call of Duty to get an official response to the delay rumors.
They did not know anything about it, or so they said, while they try and craft a public statement........
Still just a rumor, but my but tells me something is up.
The lack of clear
direction makes me think that if this rumor is true, it is coming down
from Activision; that is, it's not that IW can't finish the game on
time for PC, it's that ACTI can't produce it on time.
Additional
rumors I have heard state that there has been a re-prioritizing to
ensure there is abundant console product available on store shelves by
November 10th. This could have caused the execs at Activision to move
the PC SKU release back.
On a day I
thought we'd be spending time talking about how the firefight on the
Whitehouse lawn started...I found myself reading negative info instead.
Trying to keep a positive frame of my mind, I thought I would not make too much of this PC-SKU delay rumors (here are some) going around today quite yet. I don't know electronictheatre's reporting very much (the site that broke this rumor) so I'm not lending too much credence to them for the time being.
I do like weplaycod.blogspot.com and I have read about their "confirmation"...but they don't provide a named source.
The rumors are unsubstantiated as of right now and should be treated in that way.
Sometimes, it is safer to not jump the gun...as it could rename your BS website for something other than BASHandSlash.
So, I will take the safe road and just summarize the known knowns and known unknowns so far:
1) IW only started working on the PC SKU the last month or
so. This info was given to me by a few folks on the "inside" (I'm using
unnamed sources too...lol). Though the game is developed on the PC, the
PC version of the game is not a simple port and does have some nuanced
differences. I say this to indicate that the late start time was
worrying enough that my informants thought it important enough to share
with me as it indicated that the PC SKU might be delayed.
2) Rudedog, from FPSAdmin.com stated on BASH that, after speaking with
Vince Zampella at the IW community event, the game would ship on time,
but we would probably not have modtools on day one of release.
3) IW_Hyphen tweeted that he was playing on the PC version of the game last week.
4) electronictheatre.co.uk today reported that the Euro release for MW2 is delayed to Nov 24.
5) In response to the British rumor, weplaycod.blogspot.com apparently called an insider at ATVI who stated that the rumor regarding a delay to PC game release is true.
Speaking with the folks at weplaycod tonight, I found that the comments from their insider were more probably observations. So, his/her comments could be read another way: the PC SKU is late now and the guys that sign the checks are getting pissed - but this doesn't mean that the SKU will be late.
It's amazing how many times I have thought projects at my
place of work would be delayed just before management announced
"unlimited overttime".
As an aside, big companies sometimes will leak valid
information if you can get to their employees within the first hour of
any rumor (...did weplaycod get to Activision fast enough?).
6) PST*Joker called Gamestop today, they said the drop date is still
11.10.09. and please note their website still says 11.10.09 for pc as
well. This may not mean much if the rumor is true - Activision might
not have officially had a chance to warn the retailers.
7) Rudedog did not get any information from ATVI. Not a
yes. Not a no. Does the complete lack of info from ATVI suggest that
the PR guys finally swung into action and firmly stopping any leaks?
Currently, the rumor "fits" the theory I have had regarding the way IW
has been treating the PC community: no news means they haven't finished
making the product. But that does not mean that the rumor is correct.
There is the very real possibility we are all looking at these leaks in
such a way as to fit our own perception of the way IW has been behaving
of late. For this reason the rumor has legs. I don't think there is any
doubt that the PC game has been behind schedule, but this doesn't mean
that IW won't catch that schedule up.
Delaying the game to counter pirating, another rumor I heard today,
doesn't ring true for me. The game will be pirated...a two week delay
won't make much difference here.
The most insightful comment I have heard up to now though, came from my wife after I told her about the rumor:
"...it's not as if they make any money off you (PC) people...so, who cares", she said.
Sad. Who knew she was a wannabe console game producer? :(
The article from electronictheatre.co.uk:
With the revelation of a new
release schedule from Activision-Blizzard this morning, highlighting
the publishers autumn/winter line-up, Electronic Theatre can today
confirm that the PC version of the highly-anticipated Call of Duty:
Modern Warfare 2 has suffered a delay. Originally due for a
simultaneous release with the rest of 2009’s Call of Duty onslaught,
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 will now officially be late to the
party.
On November 10th 2009, the
latest batch of Call of Duty releases will arrive on each of the
leading formats. Nintendo’s Wii will receive its’ first Call of Duty
release with the Modern Warfare subtitle, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare:
Reflex, alongside the Nintendo DS’s exclusive Call of Duty: Modern
Warfare Mobilised. Of course, November 10th also marks the release of
one of the most anticipated games of the year, Infinity Ward’s Call of
Duty: Modern Warfare 2 on Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. The PC release of
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, however, will now arrive a fortnight
later, on November 24th 2009.
No official reason has yet been given for the delay, though Electronic
Theatre would suggest that perhaps manufacturing constraints are to
blame. Though many may expect the delay to be a measure to counteract
piracy issues, as was seen with
THQ’sElectronic Theatre Image Red Faction: Guerrilla and each of
Capcom’s 2009 big three, two weeks surely won’t dull any underhanded
intentions, and with worldwide release dates drawing ever closer
publishers are under increased pressure to ship sufficient quantities
of their titles to meet demand in a timely manner, and as Call of Duty:
Modern Warfare 2 is likely to perform better at retail on consoles than
PC, it’s not surprising
Activision-Blizzard has chosen to delay Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2
on PC rather than any other format. Electronic Theatre will keep you
updated with all the latest from Activision-Blizzard and the Call of
Duty franchise.
Thanks to frocord, matt, Christopher E. (who told me so) and tr0jaN.
